At some

point this weekend, I will post about the goings on of the last month.

For tonight I shall simply say that at some point this weekend, likely tomorrow, I'll be having a drunk night. I might even be having a drunk question night. Either way, there will be booze in my future.

This is me, trying to get back on the horse...

I have spent

the last week at a conference in Las Vegas. Today was the last day and in the last session I was able to attend, someone apparently forgot to turn off their ringer. The ring tone that rang out during the session...

Star Spangled Man with a Plan

Color me very amused.

For those of you in the Albany area; Tuesday, October 2, I will be at the Olde English, celebrating a successful super annuation. We should be arriving there around 7 and I would love to see any or all of you there. Just look for the teacup, I won't be far.

no posts.

This summer was rather not what I expected. Some in good ways, some in not so good ways.

So, back in June I auditioned for a play and was cast. That was both good and bad. I had a fantastic time, was cast with [profile] hotspurre where we got to bicker like an old married couple again. Very fun. Rehearsals also chewed an huge chunk of my summer, so I did not get nearly as much done as I'd hoped. Still, the play was a lot of fun, had a great time with some people I'd never worked with before and some I had and yes, I'm still enjoying being on stage.

Work has been. That's about all I can say for it. A combination of good and bad. I'm still not sure where I stand in relation to position, next steps or anything else but I will be playing it by ear. My manager has turned in his notice. Still don't have a last day but that throws even more turmoil into the mix. Right now, I continue to do what I can and move forward.

I bought a new camera. My primary is now a Canon 5D Mark II. I have yet to really exercise it and need to figure out/plan a couple of photo shoots. One studio and one outdoors to get a real feel for how all aspects will come together. One reason is that the body is almost twice the weight of my 20D. Another is that there is no longer a conversion factor for my lenses. A 50mm lens works just like a 50mm lens. I'm quite excited by it however I need to spend some time with it.

I am preparing to superannuate. [profile] fire_flutterfly and [profile] firestarter333 will be coming up for that week and I'm very much looking forward to the visit. I've taken the day after my birthday through the end of the week off, so that will be some enjoyable time with them. Not sure what exactly we'll do, other than First Friday Filk, but I do know it will involve beer. most of it made by firestarter.

I'm way behind on photo editing and the photo of the week. A large portion of that has to do with fitting the play into my schedule and my moods related to work. I'm hoping to change that soon.

I am saddened that most of my friends have bailed for FB. I've tried it again and I just cannot get into it. I get little to know relevant information on people's lives, the interface is annoying and good lord, I don't have that much time to scan through everything to keep up. Even when LJ was at its peak, I could keep up with every journal I followed. FB, I miss probably 90% of the relevant stuff I want to see. It's really quite annoying as a large percentage of people I know have abandoned everywhere but FB. Oh well.

That's enough for now, back to my exciting Sunday of laundry and ironing.

So, I unexpectedly had the opportunity to do some gaming tonight (no rehearsal today and so I got to spend it with Catt). I play World of Warcraft... well actually, no, at the moment I don't.

Blizzard is releasing a expansion on September 25. Great, I like their expansions. Well, except when the download "pre-update" patches that you cannot put off till later and they post an "advisory" that it will take 15 - 60 min under "normal" conditions. Please don't try to play the game, shut things down, etc. Then the status bar doesn't actually move so you've got no clue how long things might take. So, instead of playing the game, I'm writing a nastygram to Blizzard that won't make a damned bit of difference because I'm one voice of 20+ million and it's not like I'm going to quit the game.

God damnit

Well,

fuck a bunch of that.

What had been a very nice evening ended in a smoulder pile of shite. A hit and run driver hit my car... and 2 others all legally parked in front of a building.

My car is movable but not drivable. The police may have information on the driver. I'll find out when I pick up the accident report tomorrow.

What the ever lovin' fuck universe...

In other news, there will be drinking tonight. After that drive, there will be drinking.

After much discussion and quite frankly, more than a year of deciding; I now have a Canon 5D Mark II in my possession. I didn't expect it till after Pi and I haven't decided if it's going with me... but I have it. I finally have a full frame DSLR, with an amazing light sensitivity. No more conversion factors in my head to shoot with.

I is a happy Dominus.

I have also been informed that there will be more... focus, put on me for the POTW :D

Week 31

So, it seems
Blue
aquila_dominus
that twice a year 1/2 my circles and flists go dark and we have hit one of those times. It is the nature of the groups of people I tend to associate with I suppose.

The 1/2 for this time of year are the SCAdians. For the last 2 weeks, the posting has been slowing and starting basically today, the overwhelming majority will go completely dark. It's Pennsic time. The other 1/2 is when Scarborough fires up and the Rennie 1/2 of my circles and flists fade to nearly nothing.

It's always interesting to me when things fire back up on the flip side as it takes time to re-connect. All the chatter between people that shared an experience and they re-live it online, which is fine; I do the same thing when I have an experience. It's just interesting watching and being a part of things settling back into a groove where I fit again.

Years ago, when I first moved to NY, I would get a little bitter as the large majority of the people I knew were part of Scarborough and thus I'd be largely on my own during that window. These days, I take the time in those windows and focus on other people and things, which is easier now that my universe has expanded.

Still, my electronic universe will be very quiet for the next 10 days.

Bad Movie Science,/i>
Is America loosing its scientific and rational edge? If the flat-out destruction of the most basic laws of the universe and logic presented in the past few decades of Hollywood sci-fi and comic book blockbusters is any indication, the answer is arrgh, yes! How does Tony Stark fall 1000+ meters onto concrete and not end up as Iron-shelled red goo, and where does The Hulk's extra mass come from? Ever ask why they didn't have night goggles in Aliens or Doom, unmanned air and ground vehicles in Avatar, or GPS or RFID tracking for the androids in Blade Runner, A.I. or I, Robot, and why does every post-apocalypse movie ditch bicycles? Bring your own worst violations and plot holes and lets strike a blow for good science and logic in movies (and have some laughs)!

The Electronic Battlefield is Here
The Economist magazine has described cyberspace as "the fifth domain of warfare." Whether its "hacktivists" like Anonymous and Wikileaks, the US Cybercommand (the unified military command for the fifth domain) or the CIA's "Olympic Games" operation against Iran (which inadvertently released the Stuxnet worm to the internet) cyberwarfare is all over the news. What is going on, what can we expect in the future and how do we prepare for Infocalypse?

I have
Blue
aquila_dominus
apparently lost my mind.

In June I auditioned for a part in The Fantasticks. I was offered the part of Hucklebee, the boy's father. Ok, it's not all bad, the girl's father is [profile] hotspurre and we'll get to play off each other like we did in 1776 only more so. The other interesting part is that he and I are in more songs than any other member of the cast. Granted, several of the songs we have bit background parts, but still. That also means I have my lines and 7 songs to learn in the next 6 weeks.

I'm actually looking quite forward to it as I've not been on stage since 1776. Perhaps 18 months is about right.

So, if you're in the Capital District of New York on September 7,8, 13, 14 or 15, come see the show.

Not the way
Blue
aquila_dominus
we'd planned tonight.

So, tonight is normally date night but with tomorrow being July 4 and a planned day of people at the house, we intended to spend it cleaning. That was before the fridge exploded. OK, so the fridge didn't really explode, just one of the shelves. The largest, most used shelf to be exact. I needed to take it out to be able to remove one of the crispers to drain it. Clue very carefully attempted to set it near the sink and it exploded. Did you know that those things are made of tempered safety glass?

Anyway, the fridge has been giving us signs for quite a while. The pint or more of water per week that is draining into the main compartment. Monday morning I found the freezer door standing wide open. Today, a shelf explodes. This is the device letting us know that our time is limited, so we went out and bought a new fridge tonight. That's not as easy as it sounds. You see, our house is near 200 years old and while the kitchen is much newer than that, it was set up when the avg fridge was 32 7/8 inches wide. The current standard is 35 3/4 inches. We found one, that had almost all the features we wanted and most importantly FIT the space. Even better is that we spend about 1/2 of what we expected.

House did not get cleaned the way we intended. Baking did not happen as intended. Reading did not happen as intended. On the flip side, on Friday the 13th we'll get a new fridge and the trained monkeys will put the old one in the basement :D

I do not
Blue
aquila_dominus
frequently post about my job or work online as I do not want to become one of those examples that HR or CNN use about what not to post. I am however going to post about work today.

Several months ago, I applied for a spot in the Certified Solution Architect (CSA) program that my company offers. It is a relatively new program that is around a year old. I am currently in a management program for Program Managers, which quite frankly, I am not. I am a technician and a solution architect, not a program manager. This new program would have been a good fit for me and my skills and where I really want to head with my career.

Today, I found out I was not selected for the program. I am partially disappointed and yet, not all that broken up and I'm not sure why. I am a little annoyed that another in my department was selected but I also suspect that they had help from management on putting together their application, assistance I neither sought (and probably should have), nor was I offered (I suspect they were). That's really nothing more than annoyance however.

Part of the reason that I'm not that upset is that I am facing a stupid amount of work between now and the end of the year. We have 3 Federal mandates to implement by Jan 1 and 4 more major projects on the core system. Add to that 2 separate additional contracts; one awarded this time last year and one awarded Monday. All of this and I am the ONLY Data/Database Architect in portion of the company. I have finally been given permission to hire a minion, but I'm still facing a stupid amount of work. I effectively will be doing 3 (or more) people's work. The CSA program is on top of the day job, thus that would be a 4th job.

The real point is, I should be more upset and I don't know why I'm not.

I do know that I will be ensuring that as far up the food chain as I can rattle will realize that I'm doing all the data work on every project up here.
